First, once you have helped your side complete all the opening goals, the Gates will open and there will be the Ten Hour War. Participants in this event who have completed the questline to earn the The Scepter of the Shifting Sands have the chance to earn the once-in-a-server-lifetime Black Qiraji Resonating Crystal mount, the only bug mount you can ride outside Ahn'Qiraj.

After this, the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj and the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj will be available for 20- and 40-man raiding fun!

The opening of the Gates of Ahn'qiraj is the event preceding the availability of the Ahn'Qiraj raid instance. To open the Gates, each side must gather and contribute large numbers of specific resources to quest givers located in Ironforge (Alliance) or Orgrimmar (Horde) to fund the expedition to open these raid instances. But this isn't without reward.

Doing the farming quests is a great way to earn a lot of city faction reputation to buy that sought-after cross-racial mount. In fact, it's the best way in Classic to do this!
Even if you are high level and plan to farm mostly the highest level quests to maximize your commendation output, it pays to do as many of the lower level quests once, as the first time you do any of these quests you are awarded 10 commendations.

About the Farming Quests

Each of the three gathering professions (Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning) and each of three Secondary Professions (Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid) have farming quests associated with them. By turning in needed supplies to the quest givers, you contribute toward your side's access to the mighty instances of Ahn'Qiraj in Silithus and earn rewards at the same time.
